We had the opportunity to conduct a Q&A session with two of our remarkable clients, Mr. and Mrs. Peal, who have a deep passion for gardening and cultivating their own produce. They lead an organic lifestyle, and it's inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and interest our clients share in what we love doing! Discover what they have learned from their first year of growing their own produce below following our vegetable garden installation in their garden.
MR AND MRS PEAL'S EXPERIENCE WITH SLEEPER BEDS
Q: Why did you decide to grow your own vegetables?
A: My grandma and great uncle both loved growing fruit and vegetables and they passed the hobby onto my mum. I’ve always helped my mum out in the garden and when we moved to somewhere with a bit more space I was really keen to get a
vegetable patch going. One day I’d love to grow and sell fruit and veg boxes locally but one step at a time for now!
Q: What benefit do you see having your own produce?
A: It’s nice to know where your food has come from and it certainly tastes much better than supermarket food! My wife loves having freshly cut flowers in the
house and I’ve really enjoyed being able to give away lots of veggies to family and
neighbours. It’s also really nice and relaxing to pop outside and either harvest or do some work on the beds.
Q: How easy do you find managing your sleeper beds?
A: It’s my first year managing so much produce on such a large
scale, so some things have been more successful than others. I had a very detailed plan which really helped and usually it’s not that much work each week - the hardest thing is picking and using all the produce!

Q: How is your first season going?
A: The first seasons gone really well but the weather has been pretty tricky! The constant rain and the lack of sun has meant some things have been really successful and others haven’t done so well. My grandma is upset I haven’t done any potatoes but she’s very happy with all the cut flowers. Our most successful thing this year was the cauliflower and the sweet peas!
Q: What are your plans for 2024?
A: Don’t tell my wife but I’m already chatting to Gareth about potentially doing some
raised beds in the field at the back of the house... then we can do some of the easier stuff there (onions, potatoes, leeks etc.) and start building towards doing vegetable
boxes one day! I can definitely improve at choosing the right veggies for the time of year and getting successional planting right. What I’ve learnt this year is there is still much much more to learn!
